This issue of FineArt Forum is dedicated to the memory of John
Whitney Snr. who died on Friday 22 September 1995.

I first saw work by John Whitney Snr. at the Cybernetic
Serindipity exhibiton at the ICA in London in 1968. His work had
a direct influence on my own career and I began to work with
computers systems as my primary medium soon after

I had the great pleasure to meet him in Groningen at the SISEA 90
where he was the Keynote Speaker.

Whitney will be remembered as the founding figure of the computer
arts field. He worked with military surplus analog computers in
the 1950's and began working on digital systems in the early 1960's.

His book "Digital Harmony, On the Complementarity of Music and
Visual Art" was published by Byte Books/McGraw Hill in 1980.

Dear Friends,

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I just learned that
John Whitney,Sr died on Friday (22 September 1995) and I knew you

The impact he had on my life is immeasurable. I will miss him
deeply and remember him always with great respect and affection.

If any of you have a recollection of a personal interaction with
John or an expression of what he meant to you, his sons, John,
Jr., Mark and Michael would appreciate your sending them a note
so that they may collect these thoughts for a memorial tribute.

The email address is: jwhit@earthlink.com

Sadly and with regards to all,
